This avoids the danger of uncontrolled proliferation, a common fear of releasing man-made organisms into the environment. Without the protective proteins produced by their neighbors, the bacteria will quickly die. This technique can be used to control genetically modified bacteria and to create gut bacteria to protect patients from infections.
