The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) assesses intercultural competence—the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities. Intercultural competence has been identified as a critical capability in a number of studies focusing on overseas effectiveness of international sojourners, international business adaptation and job performance, international student adjustment, international transfer of technology and information, international study abroad, and inter-ethnic relations within nations.
In February 2022, the CBTE program launched the Intercultural Competence workshop series supported by an award from the Duke Graduate School. The curriculum included: an initial assessment, four hybrid workshops, and crafting an Individual Development Plan (IDP). In addition to training our graduate students to be great scientists, we must also train them to be good people.
The workshops were led by Dr. Karis Boyd-Sinkler (Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Duke University Pratt School of Engineering). Students also could meet with Dr. Boyd-Sinkler 1:1 to discuss their assessment results and walk through their IDP plans. Rachel Katz (PhD Student, BME DEIA Chair) spoke at the third workshop. She highlighted what Duke's BME department is doing in terms of DEIA efforts, and shared resources that are available to our students. Topics included: Inclusion, Mentorship, Microaggressions & Discriminatory Behavior, Identifying & Reporting Inappropriate Incidents.
